Theme: Duty

 Hymn 18
 Anonymous

 Be firm and be faithful; desert not the right;
 The brave become bolder the darker the night.
 Then up and be doing, though cowards may fail;
 Thy duty pursuing, dare all and prevail.

 If scorn be thy portion, if hatred and loss,
 If stripes or a prison, remember the cross.
 God watches above thee, and He will requite;
 Forsake those that love thee, but never the right.

Readings from the Bible
Exodus 20:1‑17
And God spake all these words, saying, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.  Thou shalt have no other gods before me.  Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.  Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.  Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.  Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.  #Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.  Thou shalt not kill.  Thou shalt not commit adultery.  Thou shalt not steal.  Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.  Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

Deuteronomy 28:12 (to :)
The Lord shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand:

II Chronicles 8:12‑16 Solomon
Solomon offered burnt offerings unto the Lord on the altar of the Lord, which he had built before the porch, Even after a certain rate every day, offering according to the commandment of Moses, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts, three times in the year, even in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles.  And he appointed, according to the order of David his father, the courses of the priests to their service, and the Levites to their charges, to praise and minister before the priests, as the duty of every day required: the porters also by their courses at every gate: for so had David the man of God commanded.  And they departed not from the commandment of the king unto the priests and Levites concerning any matter, or concerning the treasures.  Now all the work of Solomon was prepared unto the day of the foundation of the house of the Lord, and until it was finished. So the house of the Lord was perfected.

Psalms 90:16,17
Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children.  And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

Psalms 104:23,24
Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening.  O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.

Ecclesiastes 3:17
I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.

Ecclesiastes 12:1‑14
Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain: In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened, And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low; Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets: Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.  Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.  #Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.  And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.  The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.  The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.  And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.  #Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.  For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
Isaiah 32:17 the,18
the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.  And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places;

Isaiah 62:11
Behold, the Lord hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.

I Corinthians 15:51‑58
Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.  For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.  So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.  O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?  The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.  But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Readings from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
8:28‑16
  We should examine ourselves and learn what is the affection and purpose of the heart, for in this way only can we learn what we honestly are.  If a friend informs us of a fault, do we listen patiently to the rebuke and credit what is said?  Do we not rather give thanks that we are "not as other men"?  During many years the author has been most grateful for merited rebuke.  The wrong lies in unmerited censure,‑‑in the falsehood which does no one any good.   The test of all prayer lies in the answer to these questions: Do we love our neighbor better because of this asking?  Do we pursue the old selfishness, satisfied with having prayed for something better, though we give no evidence of the sincerity of our requests by living consistently with our prayer?  If selfishness has given place to kindness, we shall regard our neighbor unselfishly, and bless them that curse us; but we shall never meet this great duty simply by asking that it may be done.  There is a cross to be taken up before we can enjoy the fruition of our hope and faith.

22:11‑22
  "Work out your own salvation," is the demand of Life and Love, for to this end God worketh with you.  "Occupy till I come!"  Wait for your reward, and "be not weary in well doing."  If your endeavors are beset by fearful odds, and you receive no present reward, go not back to error, nor become a sluggard in the race.
  When the smoke of battle clears away, you will discern the good you have done, and receive according to your deserving.  Love is not hasty to deliver us from temptation, for Love means that we shall be tried and purified.

30:26
  If we have triumphed sufficiently over the errors of material sense to allow Soul to hold the control, we shall loathe sin and rebuke it under every mask.  Only in this way can we bless our enemies, though they may not so construe our words.  We cannot choose for ourselves, but must work out our salvation in the way Jesus taught.  In meekness and might, he was found preaching the gospel to the poor.  Pride and fear are unfit to bear the standard of Truth, and God will never place it in such hands.

37:16
  When will Jesus' professed followers learn to emulate him in all his ways and to imitate his mighty works?  Those who procured the martyrdom of that righteous man would gladly have turned his sacred career into a mutilated doctrinal platform.  May the Christians of to‑day take up the more practical import of that career!  It is possible,‑‑yea, it is the duty and privilege of every child, man, and woman,‑‑to follow in some degree the example of the Master by the demonstration of Truth and Life, of health and holiness.  Chris‑tians claim to be his followers, but do they follow him in the way that he commanded?  Hear these imperative commands: "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect!"  "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature!"  "Heal the sick!"

98:31
  The way through which immortality and life are learned is not ecclesiastical but Christian, not human but divine, not physical but metaphysical, not material but scientifically spiritual.  Human philosophy, ethics, and superstition afford no demonstrable divine Principle by which mortals can escape from sin; yet to escape from sin, is what the Bible demands.  "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling," says the apostle, and he straightway adds: "for it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure" (Philippians ii. 12, 13).  Truth has furnished the key to the kingdom, and with this key Christian Science has opened the door of the human understanding.  None may pick the lock nor enter by some other door.  The ordinary teachings are material and not spiritual.  Christian Science teaches only that which is spiritual and divine, and not human.  Christian Science is unerring and Divine; the human sense of things errs because it is human.

260:13
  Science reveals the possibility of achieving all good, and sets mortals at work to discover what God has already done; but distrust of one's ability to gain the goodness desired and to bring out better and higher results, often hampers the trial of one's wings and ensures failure at the outset.

339:20‑14 As
As the mythology of pagan Rome has yielded to a more spiritual idea of Deity, so will our material theories yield to spiritual ideas, until the finite gives place to the infinite, sickness to health, sin to holiness, and God's kingdom comes "in earth, as it is in heaven."  The basis of all health, sinlessness, and immortality is the great fact that God is the only Mind; and this Mind must be not merely believed, but it must be understood.  To get rid of sin through Science, is to divest sin of any supposed mind or reality, and never to admit that sin can have intelligence or power, pain or pleasure.  You conquer error by denying its verity.  Our various theories will never lose their imaginary power for good or evil, until we lose our faith in them and make life its own proof of harmony and God.
  This text in the book of Ecclesiastes conveys the Christian Science thought, especially when the word duty, which is not in the original, is omitted: "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:  Fear God, and keep His commandments:  for this is the whole duty of man."  In other words:  Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:  love God and keep His commandments:  for this is the whole of man in His image and likeness.  Divine Love is infinite.  Therefore all that really exists is in and of God, and manifests His love.

385:15
  Constant toil, deprivations, exposures, and all untoward conditions, if without sin, can be experienced without suffering.  Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself.  If you sprain the muscles or wound the flesh, your remedy is at hand.  Mind decides whether or not the flesh shall be discolored, painful, swollen, and inflamed.

454:14
  He, who understands in a sufficient degree the Principle of Mind‑healing, points out to his student error as well as truth, the wrong as well as the right practice.  Love for God and man is the true incentive in both healing and teaching.  Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way.  Right motives give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to speech and action.  Love is priestess at the altar of Truth.  Wait patiently for divine Love to move upon the waters of mortal mind, and form the perfect concept.  Patience must "have her perfect work."

495:25‑19
  Question.‑‑How can I progress most rapidly in the understanding of Christian Science?
  Answer.‑‑Study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit.  Adhere to the divine Principle of Christian Science and follow the behests of God, abiding steadfastly in wisdom, Truth, and Love.  In the Science of Mind, you will soon ascertain that error cannot destroy error.  You will also learn that in Science there is no transfer of evil suggestions from one mortal to another, for there is but one Mind, and this ever‑present omnipotent Mind is reflected by man and governs the entire universe.  You will learn that in Christian Science the first duty is to obey God, to have one Mind, and to love another as yourself.
  We all must learn that Life is God.  Ask yourself: Am I living the life that approaches the supreme good?  Am I demonstrating the healing power of Truth and Love?  If so, then the way will grow brighter "unto the perfect day."  Your fruits will prove what the understanding of God brings to man.  Hold perpetually this thought,‑‑that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being.

519:25
  God rests in action.  Imparting has not impoverished, can never impoverish, the divine Mind.  No exhaustion follows the action of this Mind, according to the apprehension of divine Science.  The highest and sweetest rest, even from a human standpoint, is in holy work.

Silent prayer, followed by the audible repetition of the Lord’s Prayer.

 Hymn 183
 Horatius Bonar – Adapted

 Make haste, O man, to do
   Whatever must be done;
 Thou hast no time to lose in sloth,
   When all to Truth must come.

 The useful and the great,
   The thing that never dies,
 The silent toil that is not lost,‑‑
   Set these before thine eyes.

 Up, face the task and work;
   Fling ease and self away;
 This is no time for thee to sleep;
   Up, watch, and work, and pray.

Sharing of experiences, testimonies and remarks by members of the congregation.

 Hymn 258
 James Russell Lowell – Adapted

 Oft to every man and nation
   Comes the moment to decide,
 In the strife of Truth with falsehood,
   For the good or evil side.
 A great cause, God's new Messiah,
   Shows to each the bloom or blight,
 So can choice be made by all men
   Twixt the darkness and the light.

 New occasions teach new duties,
   Time makes ancient creeds uncouth;
 They must upward still and onward
   Who would keep abreast of Truth,
 And serenely down the future
   See the thought of men incline
 To the side of perfect justice
   And to God's supreme design.

 Though the cause of evil prosper,
   Yet 'tis Truth alone is strong;
 Though her portion be the scaffold,
   And upon the throne be wrong,
 Yet that scaffold sways the future,
   And behind the dim unknown
 Standeth God within the shadow
   Keeping watch above His own.
