Theme: Perfection

 Hymn 15
 Based on the Danish of – Bernhard S. Ingemann

 As gold by fire is tested,
   Its purity shown forth,
 So cleansing fires of Truth may prove
   To man his native worth.

 And as a mirror shows us
   A likeness clear and bright,
 So God forever sees His child
   Revealed in radiant light.

 'Twas thus the loving Master
   Saw man's perfection shine,
 Beheld God's child forever pure
   In radiance all divine.

Readings from the Bible.

Job 11:7,13‑15,18,19 (to ;)
Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?

If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him; If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.  For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear:

And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.  Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid;

Psalms 50:1‑6 (to 1st .)
The mighty God, even the Lord, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.  Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.  Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.  He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people.  Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.  And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself.

Psalms 18:20‑32
The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.  For I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God.  For all his judgments were before me, and I did not put away his statutes from me.  I was also upright before him, and I kept myself from mine iniquity.  Therefore hath the Lord recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.  With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright; With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward.  For thou wilt save the afflicted people; but wilt bring down high looks.  For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.  For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.  As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.  For who is God save the Lord?  or who is a rock save our God?  It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.

Psalms 19:7‑14
The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.  The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.  The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.  More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.  Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.  Who can understand his errors?  cleanse thou me from secret faults.  Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.  Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.

Psalms 37:37
Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.

Psalms 138:1‑8
I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.  I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.  In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.  All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O Lord, when they hear the words of thy mouth.  Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the Lord: for great is the glory of the Lord.  Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.  Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.  The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.

Matthew 5:48

Romans 12:1‑18
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.  For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.  For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.  Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.  Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.  Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.  Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.  Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.  Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.  Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.  If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

I Corinthians 13:1‑10
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.  And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.  And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.  Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.  Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.  For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.  But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

II Corinthians 13:11
Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.

Readings from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

2:23
  God is Love.  Can we ask Him to be more?  God is intelligence.  Can we inform the infinite Mind of anything He does not already comprehend?  Do we expect to change perfection?  Shall we plead for more at the open fount, which is pouring forth more than we accept? The unspoken desire does bring us nearer the source of all existence and blessedness.

149:3
  Mind as far outweighs drugs in the cure of disease as in the cure of sin.  The more excellent way is divine Science in every case.  Is materia medica a science or a bundle of speculative human theories?  The prescription which succeeds in one instance fails in another, and this is owing to the different mental states of the patient.  These states are not comprehended, and they are left without explanation except in Christian Science.  The rule and its perfection of operation never vary in Science.  If you fail to succeed in any case, it is because you have not demonstrated the life of Christ, Truth, more in your own life,‑‑because you have not obeyed the rule and proved the Principle of divine Science.

201:7‑19
  We cannot build safely on false foundations.  Truth makes a new creature, in whom old things pass away and "all things are become new."  Passions, selfishness, false appetites, hatred, fear, all sensuality, yield to spirituality, and the superabundance of being is on the side of God, good.
  We cannot fill vessels already full.  They must first be emptied. Let us disrobe error.  Then, when the winds of God blow, we shall not hug our tatters close about us.
  The way to extract error from mortal mind is to pour in truth through flood‑tides of Love.  Christian perfection is won on no other basis.

232:32‑15
  There is neither place nor opportunity in Science for error of any sort.  Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power.  These proofs consist solely in the destruction of sin, sickness, and death by the power of Spirit, as Jesus destroyed them.  This is an element of progress, and progress is the law of God, whose law demands of us only what we can certainly fulfil.
  In the midst of imperfection, perfection is seen and acknowledged only by degrees.  The ages must slowly work up to perfection.  How long it must be before we arrive at the demonstration of scientific being, no man knoweth,‑‑not even "the Son but the Father;" but the false claim of error continues its delusions until the goal of goodness is assiduously earned and won.

239:23
  Mortal mind is the acknowledged seat of human motives.  It forms material concepts and produces every discordant action of the body. If action proceeds from the divine Mind, action is harmonious.  If it comes from erring mortal mind, it is discordant and ends in sin, sickness, death.  Those two opposite sources never mingle in fount or stream.  The perfect Mind sends forth perfection, for God is Mind.  Imperfect mortal mind sends forth its own resemblances, of which the wise man said, "All is vanity."

253:32
  The divine demand, "Be ye therefore perfect," is scientific, and the human footsteps leading to perfection are indispensable.  Individuals are consistent who, watching and praying, can "run, and not be weary; . . .  walk, and not faint," who gain good rapidly and hold their position, or attain slowly and yield not to discouragement.  God requires perfection, but not until the battle between Spirit and flesh is fought and the victory won.  To stop eating, drinking, or being clothed materially before the spiritual facts of existence are gained step by step, is not legitimate.  When we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously, He directs our path.  Imperfect mortals grasp the ultimate of spiritual perfection slowly; but to ^begin^ aright and to continue the strife of demonstrating the great problem of being, is doing much.

325:10
  In Colossians (iii. 4) Paul writes: "When Christ, who is our life, shall appear [be manifested], then shall ye also appear [be manifested] with him in glory." When spiritual being is understood in all its perfection, continuity, and might, then shall man be found in God's image.  The absolute meaning of the apostolic words is this:  Then shall man be found, in His likeness, perfect as the Father, indestructible in Life, "hid with Christ in God,"‑‑with Truth in divine Love, where human sense hath not seen man.

353:13
  The age has not wholly outlived the sense of ghostly beliefs.  It still holds them more or less.  Time has not yet reached eternity, immortality, complete reality.  All the real is eternal.  Perfection underlies reality.  Without perfection, nothing is wholly real.  All things will continue to disappear, until perfection appears and reality is reached.  We must give up the spectral at all points.  We must not continue to admit the somethingness of superstition, but we must yield up all belief in it and be wise.  When we learn that error is not real, we shall be ready for progress, "forgetting those things which are behind."

414:21
The Scripture declares, "The Lord He is God [good]; there is none else beside Him."  Even so, harmony is universal, and discord is unreal.  Christian Science declares that Mind is substance, also that matter neither feels, suffers, nor enjoys.  Hold these points strongly in view.  Keep in mind the verity of being,‑‑that man is the image and likeness of God, in whom all being is painless and permanent.  Remember that man's perfection is real and unimpeachable, whereas imperfection is blameworthy, unreal, and is not brought about by divine Love.

470:11‑31
  Divine Science explains the abstract statement that there is one Mind by the following self‑evident proposition: If God, or good, is real, then evil, the unlikeness of God, is unreal.  And evil can only seem to be real by giving reality to the unreal.  The children of God have but one Mind.  How can good lapse into evil, when God, the Mind of man, never sins?  The standard of perfection was originally God and man.  Has God taken down His own standard, and has man fallen?
  God is the creator of man, and, the divine Principle of man remaining perfect, the divine idea or reflection, man, remains perfect.  Man is the expression of God's being.  If there ever was a moment when man did not express the divine perfection, then there was a moment when man did not express God, and consequently a time when Deity was unexpressed‑‑that is, without entity.  If man has lost perfection, then he has lost his perfect Principle, the divine Mind.  If man ever existed without this perfect Principle or Mind, then man's existence was a myth.

595:11 Perfection
Perfection; the eternal demand of divine Science.

Silent prayer followed by the audible repetition of the Lord’s prayer

 Hymn 51
 Mary Alice Dayton

 Eternal Mind the Potter is,
   And thought th' eternal clay:
 The hand that fashions is divine,
   His works pass not away.
 Man is the noblest work of God,
   His beauty, power and grace,
 Immortal; perfect as his Mind
   Reflected face to face.

 God could not make imperfect man
   His model infinite;
 Unhallowed thought He could not plan,
   Love's work and Love must fit.
 Life, Truth and Love the pattern make,
   Christ is the perfect heir;
 The clouds of sense roll back, and show
   The form divinely fair.

 God's will is done; His kingdom come;
   The Potter's work is plain.
 The longing to be good and true
   Has brought the light again.
 And man does stand as God's own child,
   The image of His love.
 Let gladness ring from every tongue,
   And heaven and earth approve.

Sharing of experiences, testimonies and remarks by members of the congregation.

 Hymn 342
 Laura Lee Randall

 This is the day the Lord hath made;
   Be glad, give thanks, rejoice;
 Stand in His presence, unafraid,
   In praise lift up your voice.
 All perfect gifts are from above,
   And all our blessings show
 The amplitude of God's dear love
   Which every heart may know.

 The Lord will hear before we call,
   And every need supply;
 Good things are freely given to all
   Who on His word rely.
 We come today to bring Him praise
   Not for such gifts alone,
 But for the higher, deeper ways
   In which His love is shown.

 For sin destroyed, for sorrow healed,
   For health and peace restored;
 For Life and Love by Truth revealed,
   We thank and bless the Lord.
 This is the day the Lord hath made,
   In praise lift up your voice.
 In shining robes of joy arrayed,
   Be glad, give thanks, rejoice.

Subject: Mind

 Hymn 216
 From the German of – Georg Neumark

 O he who trusts in God's protection
   And hopes in Him when fears alarm,
 Is sheltered by His lovingkindness,
   Delivered by His mighty arm;
 If ye God's law can understand,
 Ye have not builded on the sand.

 O wait on Him with veneration,
   Be silent in humility;
 He leads you after His own counsel,
   His will is done and still shall be;
 All good for you His wisdom planned;
 O trust in God and understand.

Readings from the Bible.

Luke 4:14‑21 Jesus
Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.  And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.  #And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.  And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias.  And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.  And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.  And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

Psalms 31:1‑3,5,16,19,23,24
In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.  Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.  For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me.

Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth.

Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies' sake.

Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!

O love the Lord, all ye his saints: for the Lord preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.  Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.

Silent prayer, followed by the audible repetition of the Lord’s prayer, with its spiritual interpretation as given in the Christian Science textbook.

Our Father which art in heaven,
Our Father-Mother God, all-harmonious,
Hallowed be Thy name.
Adorable One.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy kingdom is come; Thou art ever-present.
Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Enable us to know – as in heaven, so on earth
God is omnipotent, supreme.
Give us this day our daily bread;
Give us grace for today; feed the famished affections;
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And Love is reflected in love;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil;
And God leadeth us not into temptation, but delivereth us from sin, disease, and death.
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
For God is infinite, all-power, all Life, Truth, Love, over all, and All.

 Hymn 10
 Frederic W. Root – Based on hymn by Martin Luther

 All power is given unto our Lord,
   On Him we place reliance;
 With truth from out His sacred word
   We bid our foes defiance.
     With Him we shall prevail,
     Whatever may assail;
     He is our shield and tower,
     Almighty is His power;
     His kingdom is forever.

 Rejoice, ye people, praise His name,
   His care doth e'er surround us.
 His love to error's thralldom came,
   And from its chains unbound us.
     Our Lord is God alone,
     No other power we own;
     No other voice we heed,
     No other help we need;
     His kingdom is forever.

 O then give thanks to God on high,
   Who life to all is giving;
 The hosts of death before Him fly,
   In Him we all are living.
     Then let us know no fear,
     Our King is ever near;
     Our stay and fortress strong,
     Our strength, our hope, our song;
     His kingdom is forever.

 Hymn 265
 Samuel Johnson – Adapted

 Onward, Christian, though the region
   Where thou art seem drear and lone;
 God hath set a guardian legion
   Very near thee, press thou on.

 By the Christ road, and none other,
   Is the mount of vision won;
 Tread it with rejoicing, brother:
   Jesus trod it, press thou on.

 By thy trustful, calm endeavor,
   Guiding, cheering, like the sun,
 Earth‑bound hearts thou shalt deliver;
   O, for their sake, press thou on.

"The Scientific Statement of Being" (S&H p. 468} and the correlative scripture according to I John 3:1-3.
There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual.
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p.468

1John.3
[1] Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
[2] Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
[3] And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
Benediction

Psalms 32:7 thou shalt (to 1st .)
 thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.
